In March 2024, I received a call from Mike Jezdimir with Industrial Coatings Group about a significant project: the renovation of the existing roof at the Hoover Met baseball stadium. This project held a special place for me, as I had worked with Mike and his team on the same roof 12 years ago while representing another paint supplier. Now, it was time to rejuvenate the coating, which had reached the end of its lifecycle.
Planning the Renovation
To kick off the project, we sat down with Mike Jezdimir and Kenny Roper, the other owner of Industrial Coatings Group, to devise a comprehensive plan for surface preparation and product selection. Brasfield & Gorrie, the general contractor managing the Hoover Met renovation, oversaw several aspects of the project, including parking lot renovations, structural steel updates, and an entrance expansion. The roof renovation was the final piece of the puzzle.
Given that the stadium hosts the SEC baseball tournament annually from mid-May through the end of May, we faced a hard deadline to complete the project by the last week of April. The scope of the project was extensive, covering 105,000 square feet of roof.
Surface Preparation and Coating System
To ensure a solid foundation for the new coating, we specified SPCSP 14 waterjet cleaning for the roof. Industrial Coatings Group then applied one coat of E-Bond as a primer, at a thickness of one to two dry mills. This penetrating 100% solids epoxy effectively prepared the existing substrate, which had begun to chalk and delaminate in places.
Following the primer application, Industrial Coatings Group applied two full coats of Perma-Gloss Fluorourethane in a custom color we now call Hoover Blue. This high-performance fluorourethane resin system offers industry-leading color and gloss retention, ensuring the roof will look vibrant for years to come.
One of the standout aspects of this project was our ability to provide Perma-Gloss within one day for delivery. This quick turnaround time set us apart from other suppliers and allowed Industrial Coatings Group to stay ahead of schedule, ensuring timely completion before the SEC tournament.
A High-End Renovation on Display
Being part of this high-end stadium renovation was a proud moment for us. During every game of the SEC baseball tournament, ESPN broadcasts live, featuring impressive flyovers of the stadium. Seeing our material on display during these broadcasts is a testament to the quality and versatility of Induron products.
